Can Naruto Use All Chakra Natures?

Yes and no, depending exactly when in the story you mean — the verdict table.

The short answer

Only with borrowed power, and only late in the story. Naruto’s own natural affinity is Wind Release alone, confirmed by the chakra paper test. By the end of the series, Six Paths Sage Mode gives him functional access to all five basic natures plus Yin–Yang Release — but that’s granted power from Hagoromo Ôtsutsuki, not something he trained into or was born with.

This page gives the fast yes/no verdict, arc by arc. For the full explanation of the chakra paper test and why wind specifically was his nature, see our companion guide, What Are Naruto’s Chakra Natures?

The Verdict, Arc by Arc

No

Original series and early Shippuden. Naruto has not yet undergone nature transformation training at all — the Rasengan he knows is pure shape transformation with no element attached.

No — one only

Post chakra-paper test, mid-Shippuden. Confirmed Wind Release, trained through the leaf-cutting and waterfall exercises. No other natural affinity at this point.

Partially, with help

Fourth Great Shinobi War. By drawing on individual tailed beasts’ chakra, he produces Lava Release (from Son Gokū) and Magnet Release (from Shukaku) — kekkei genkai combinations he has no personal affinity for, accessed only through borrowed chakra.

Yes — with Six Paths power

Six Paths Sage Mode, war’s end onward. Hagoromo’s power gives him all five basic natures plus Yin–Yang Release. His Truth-Seeking Balls are themselves composed of all five natures. This is the only point where “yes” is accurate, and even then it’s granted, not trained.

Still just wind, personally

Boruto era. His own natural affinity never changes. What changes across the whole timeline is what he can access with outside help, not what he was born with.

The distinction that resolves the question

An affinity is what your own chakra naturally becomes; it’s wind, permanently. Access is what you can produce with help from an external source; by the war’s end, that’s everything. Both are true depending on which one the question is actually asking — which is why “can he?” gets a different answer depending on the year in the timeline you mean.

Commonly Claimed vs. Actually True

Commonly claimedActually
Naruto naturally has all five chakra naturesHe has one natural affinity, wind, confirmed by the chakra paper test. The other four come only through Hagoromo’s granted power.
Lava and Magnet Release are Naruto’s own kekkei genkaiHe produced them once each during the war using borrowed chakra from specific tailed beasts — he doesn’t have the underlying elemental combination himself.
Naruto trained to unlock all five natures like Kakashi didKakashi actually trained all five himself over years. Naruto’s access came from a one-time grant of power from Hagoromo, not personal training in the other four.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only late in the story, and only with Hagoromo’s granted Six Paths Sage Mode. His own natural affinity is wind alone, and that never changes.
Just one: Wind Release, confirmed by the chakra paper test and trained through the leaf-cutting and waterfall exercises.
Only through Six Paths Sage Mode, granted directly by Hagoromo Ôtsutsuki during the war. He never trains these four himself the way he trained wind.
Yes, once each, during the Fourth Great Shinobi War — but by borrowing chakra from Son Gokū and Shukaku respectively, not through a personal affinity for either combination.
No. It’s granted external power, not a natural affinity he developed himself. Compare Kakashi, who genuinely trained all five natures over years of personal effort.
His Six Paths-derived abilities carry forward as Hokage, but his own personal affinity remains wind alone — the distinction between affinity and granted access doesn’t change.
An affinity is what your own chakra naturally becomes on its own. Access is what you can produce with outside help. Naruto’s affinity is wind only; his access, by the war’s end, is everything.
All five basic chakra natures plus Yin–Yang Release, combined — a direct manifestation of the “all natures at once” power Six Paths Sage Mode grants.
This page is the fast yes/no verdict by story arc. Our full chakra natures chart covers all five natures, every kekkei genkai combination, and the full cast comparison in depth.
Kakashi trained all five himself over years using the Sharingan to copy techniques. Sasuke gains access to all five late in the series through his own Rinnegan-adjacent power-up, similar in structure to Naruto’s Six Paths grant.
