What Are Naruto’s Chakra Natures? Wind Release, Explained
Everything else Naruto has ever thrown was borrowed — and the series is explicit about where it came from.

Naruto Uzumaki has exactly one natural chakra nature: Wind Release (Fūton). It was confirmed on-screen with chakra induction paper, which split cleanly in two. Every other element he has been seen using — Lava, Magnet, and eventually all five basics — was borrowed chakra, first from the tailed beasts and later from the Sage of Six Paths. He never had a second natural affinity.
This is the single most misreported fact in the Naruto fandom. Search the question and you will find articles confidently listing Naruto’s natures as “Fire, Water, Wind, Earth and Lightning,” or naming Fire as his primary and Lightning as his secondary, or crediting him with Chidori. None of that is in the manga.
What follows is the version the series actually tells: one affinity, one very hard training arc, and a late-game power-up that changes the answer without changing the affinity.

What Chakra Nature Does Naruto Have?
Wind Release. In the Japanese, Fūton — sometimes translated as Wind Style in the English dub.
Nature transformation is one of the two ways a shinobi changes chakra. Shape transformation controls the form and movement of chakra; nature transformation changes what the chakra actually is — fire, wind, lightning, earth or water. Almost every ninja is born with an inclination toward one of the five, and that inclination is called an affinity.
Naruto’s is wind, and in the Land of Fire that is unusual. Konoha shinobi lean overwhelmingly toward Fire Release, which is one reason Kakashi could not simply teach Naruto his own techniques: Kakashi’s affinity is Lightning. The village’s best-known wind user was Asuma Sarutobi, who channelled wind chakra through his trench knives, and it was Asuma who supplied the key hint that got Naruto’s training moving.
The Chakra Paper Test, Explained
Affinities are not guessed at in this world — they are measured. Chakra induction paper is made from a tree grown on chakra, and it reacts visibly to whichever nature is channelled into it. Kakashi hands Naruto a slip early in Shippuden, Naruto pushes chakra into it, and the paper splits cleanly down the middle.
Fire
The paper ignites and burns to ash.
Wind
The paper splits cleanly in two.
Lightning
The paper crumples and wrinkles.
Earth
The paper crumbles into dirt.
Water
The paper becomes damp.
One test, one reaction, one answer. There is no scene anywhere in the manga in which Naruto’s paper burns, wrinkles, crumbles or dampens. That is the whole evidentiary basis for saying he has one nature — and it is why the “he has all five from the start” claim has nothing behind it.
Why wind was the right answer narratively
Wind is described in-universe as the rarest of the five natures in the Land of Fire, and it is the nature that cuts through lightning while being vulnerable to fire. Giving the protagonist the village’s rarest element isolates him from the standard curriculum — nobody in Konoha could teach him — which is exactly the problem the training arc is built around.
How Naruto Trained Wind Release
The training runs in three stages, and each one exists because the previous one was not enough.
- Cutting a leaf. The first exercise is to hold a leaf between the palms and slice it in two with wind chakra alone. It is the standard first step for wind users: before you can shape wind, you have to reliably produce it.
- Shadow clones as a time machine. Naruto’s real advantage is not talent, it is the Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu. When a clone dispels, its experience returns to the original. Hundreds of clones training in parallel compress what should be years of practice into days — the only reason a genin-level student can complete an A-rank nature transformation at all. Yamato supervised precisely because that much chakra output needed containing.
- A waterfall. The final stage scales the leaf exercise up: split a falling column of water with wind chakra. Same skill, vastly more force required.
Why Rasengan Plus Wind Was So Hard
This is the detail that makes the whole arc make sense, and most summaries skip it.
The Rasengan contains no nature transformation at all. It is pure shape transformation — chakra spun into a sphere, modelled on the Tailed Beast Ball. Minato Namikaze created it and intended to complete it by adding his own nature to it. He died before he managed it. For years the Rasengan sat unfinished: an S-rank technique with half its potential missing.
So when Naruto adds wind to a Rasengan, he is not learning a new move. He is finishing his father’s. That is why the training is framed as impossible, why it takes an army of clones, and why the result — Wind Release: Rasenshuriken — is treated as a genuine escalation rather than a new toy.
It also came with a cost the series took seriously. The Rasenshuriken’s microscopic wind blades damage chakra networks at the cellular level, and early on that included Naruto’s own arm whenever he landed the hit directly. Only later — once he could throw it, and once Sage Mode and Kurama’s cooperation gave him the control and the healing to spare — did it become a technique he could use freely.
The most common error in fan articles
You will frequently read that Naruto uses Chidori, or a “Lightning Style Rasengan,” or a “Thunderbolt Palm.” None of these exist for Naruto. Chidori is Kakashi’s creation and Sasuke’s signature; the last is not a technique in the series at all. If a source attributes Chidori to Naruto, it is not describing the manga.
How Many Chakra Natures Does Naruto Have?
The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which point in the story you mean, and the number changes for a reason the series explains carefully. Here is the whole progression.

The distinction that resolves the whole argument
An affinity is what your own chakra naturally becomes. Access is what you can produce with help. Naruto’s affinity is, and remains, one: wind. His access eventually extends to everything. Both statements are true simultaneously, and articles that pick one and ignore the other are where the confusion starts.
Can Naruto Use Fire, Water, Earth or Lightning?
These get asked separately often enough to answer separately.
Fire Release. Naruto has no fire affinity and no fire jutsu of his own. He never learned the Fireball Jutsu; that is a Uchiha coming-of-age technique, and Sasuke’s. The only fire-adjacent element he has produced is Lava Release, borrowed from Son Gokū during the war.
Water Release. Not his. There is no Water Dragon Jutsu or Water Wall in Naruto’s repertoire — those belong to users like Tobirama, Kakashi and Zabuza. He can produce water natured chakra only through Six Paths power.
Earth Release. Also not his. Earth is Sakura’s listed nature and one of the most common in the series, but Naruto has no earth techniques of his own.
Lightning Release. The most persistent myth. Naruto has never had a lightning affinity, never used Chidori, and never had a “secondary” lightning nature. His son Boruto does have Lightning, which is very likely where some of the confusion comes from.
All five, eventually. With Six Paths chakra he can use every basic nature plus Yin–Yang Release. This is a late-story ability granted by an external source, not an affinity he was born with — and it is the honest way to say “yes” to “does Naruto have all the elements?”

What Is the Uzumaki Clan’s Chakra Nature?
A frequent follow-up, and the answer surprises people: the Uzumaki clan has no clan-wide chakra nature. Unlike the Uchiha, whose fire affinity is practically a rite of passage, the Uzumaki are not defined by an element at all. What they are known for is quantity and craft:
- Enormous chakra reserves — the reason Uzumaki were chosen as jinchūriki for the Nine-Tails across three generations.
- Exceptional vitality and long lifespans — Mito Uzumaki lived well past a century.
- Fūinjutsu, the sealing arts — Uzushiogakure’s specialty, and feared enough that the village was destroyed for it.
- Adamantine Sealing Chains — the chakra chains wielded by Mito and Kushina, a bloodline ability with no elemental component.
Individual Uzumaki still have their own affinities. Nagato could use all five natures, but through the Rinnegan rather than through Uzumaki heritage. Karin’s gifts are sensory and restorative. So if you are asking what element an Uzumaki gets, the answer is: whatever they personally happen to have. The clan gives you fuel and sealing, not fire.

Great Eastern is the officially licensed maker, which matters here because the unlicensed copies get the Konoha leaf spiral subtly wrong — wrong proportions, stamped rather than engraved. The black cloth version is the Shippuden-era one Naruto actually wears after the timeskip, not the blue original-series band.
